Training Evaluation
- An evaluation of any training undertaken is an essential part of the training process. Unless you know the impact of any training undertaken, how will you know it has been effective?
- There is no point in putting people on training courses unless they will genuinely gain benefit from it – make sure you are clear on what the training will deliver in advance
- Training can be a costly business, so it is worth knowing if the money being spent is worthwhile – evaluate the actual cost of the training against the perceived benefit gained
- After a training need has been identified and before commencing any training, you should consider exactly what and how you are going to evaluate
- Take time to think about what the objectives and outcomes are as a result of the training that is taking place. For example, increased knowledge or skills, improved efficiency, reduced risk etc. Consider how these might be measured.
- Consider the best ways to evaluate the particular type of training you are delivering. Methods can include verbal feedback, course evaluation forms, competence quizzes or tests, practical demonstrations by delegates, coaching and mentoring after the course for a period of time.
- Throughout the course delivery, try to monitor how the group and individuals have reacted to the training / materials provided, and assess whether the session could be altered or improved to better meet requirements
- Make sure that any suggestions or recommendations on course improvement are actioned when relevant
