Developing a Training Course

  • Make use of the variety of training techniques available including Presentations, Written Material, Video, Case Studies, Role Plays, Practical Demonstrations, e-Learning etc.
  • Break training instructions into digestible chunks and build gradually towards the final objective
  • Do not use punishment as an aid to learning - this will have a negative effect on people as they will feel embarrassed, resulting in a loss of interest in anything you may then go on to tell them
  • To maximise the quality of learning derived from the training session, ensure that your own presentation skills, group leading skills and facilitation skills are honed and that you practice regularly
  • Find out what training methods and approaches are available to you when you are delivering the training before you design the training session
  • Ask questions to ascertain the attitude of the trainees towards some of your proposed methods of training - are they comfortable with role plays for example?
  • Time your training session before you deliver it to ensure that the range of training needs that are identified can be comfortably covered in the time allocated, allowing plenty time for questions and queries from the group
