Preparing To Be Appraised
- Make sure you are aware of the appraisal process, its purpose and what is expected of you. Ask a Manager or Colleague if unsure of anything.
- Familiarise yourself with and fully complete any appraisal paperwork required in advance of the meeting.
- Make sure enough time is allocated to discuss all the issues or points you may have and ask to reconvene the meeting if you run short of time, rather than trying to cram everything in.
- The appraisal should be a two-way process, with feedback from you and the appraiser equally important.
- If you are unsure or uncomfortable with any part of the appraisal process let the appraiser know.
- Consider both your successes and areas where your performance has room for improvement so you provide an honest and objective perspective.
- Think about your performance over the entire appraisal period not just the last few weeks.
- Be prepared to contribute - there should normally be a reasonably even balance of dialogue throughout the discussion from you and the appraiser.
- Don't be afraid to debate any issue or action that you feel is unreasonable or unjustified.
- Do not wait for your appraisal to raise any issues or problems, raise these as and when they arise.
